I've now discovered that this isn't necessary. Eclipse have already
provided jdtCompilerAdapter.jar which does precisely the same thing.

To use it, simply put jdtCompilerAdapter.jar and jdtcore.jar (both located
in /usr/share/eclipse/plugins/org.eclipse.jdt.core_*) on the classpath and
tell ant to use it, e.g. by

ant -Dbuild.compiler=org.eclipse.jdt.core.JDTCompilerAdapter
