Strange; do you have java-1.4.2-gcj-compat/common checked out as well?

You can do that, but you'll have to use the --force option when
installing java-1.4.2-gcjHEAD-compat. Only java-1.4.2-gcj-compat
versions > 0:1.4.2.0-40jpp_44rh (i.e. Rawhide) allow clean parallel
installation of java-1.4.2-gcjHEAD-compat.
