This patch also seems to have fixed my long-standing eclipse+mozilla on
x86(?) and x86_64 problem that no one else seemed to be having.

Is the issue with -fPIC new or has it always been there? It's just that
lately I have had 3 or 4 x86_64 builds fail with this same error while
never having seen it prior to now. Maybe it was all just a coincidence.
