This page is a bit old and unmaintained: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Alfresco Anyone know someone at Alfresco who might care? Short summary - I've got a contact with engineers interested in Alfresco for their enterprise environment; they might commit resources to packaging (Fedora + EPEL); none of us know how much effort is involved; they don't want to do it alone, unless it's easy enough. It's _really_ hard to say. Since upstreams vary *wildly* in their build-ability it's difficult to guess how long each dependency will take. As for Alfresco itself, that depends upon how sane their build setup is and how easy it is to override their dependency location(s). I suspect Alfresco itself won't be too bad (famous last words). Sorry to not have anything more precise. I'm in the process of getting YaCy[1], a Java-based P2P distributed search engine and its dependencies ready to be packaged for Fedora in collaboration with upstream. While upstream was able to either kick out, replace or fork unmaintained dependencies, some of them remain and in turn pull in too many other dependencies I cannot handle myself so your help is *really* appreciated. In my opinion, YaCy would be a valuable addition to Fedora as it is matured, leverages overall usability of the distribution as a privacy-enhancing platform and we would be the *first* distro to offer a fully-integrated version of YaCy so please consider helping out, I'd really appreciate that! You can find the current state of progress at my Fedora People Space[2], the org-mode file[3] contains all dependencies and their current solutions. PDFBox[4] and FontBox[5] have been successfully ported from JPackage and are ready for review, jakarta-poi still needs porting from JPackage, jakarta-commons-fileupload is already maintained but the maintainer is unresponsive and we need a newer version. jakarta-commons-jxpath[6] is currently my biggest problem: It is owned but unreleased so I've acquired co-maintainership but ran into the problem that building requires mockrunner[7] which in turn pulls in so many dependencies (e.g. mockejb) I cannot handle myself. There is a thread[8] (in German only, sorry) about the ongoing collaboration with upstream; they have another board[9] for discussions in English the thread could also be continued at. I am trying to design a software which can classify and store logs from different systems. It will be a client-server system, so that someone from the server can monitor the logs of different systems. I tried to do some research on the logging of data in fedora, but couldn't find many helpful sites. So I would be grateful if someone could tell me the working of the logging system in Fedora (briefly). Secondly, there are some log files in the directory */var/log* which couldn't be displayed as text. I used the System Logging software provided in System Tools to open them. But I would want to open them through my software, any idea how to do that? Looking forward to replies. Thanks in advance. I have downloaded and installed Sun's JDK 1.6 & 1.5 into /opt and it looks good. I can via environment setting run the java -version tests. However I have added the /opt/jdk[...]/bin/java to the alternatives list in the 'java' category for both versions as follows: /opt/jdk.1.6[...]/bin/java priority: 1000 /opt/jdk.1.5[...]/bin/java priority: 500 then selected JDK v1.6, and tried to launch Eclipse. What resulted was a popup failure with the relevant entry: [...] -vm /opt/jdk1.6.0_16/bin/../jre/lib/i386/client/libjvm.so [...] Note: the entire "barf" is at the end of the line. Why is 'java' replaced with '../jre/lib/i386/client/libjvm.so'? Yes, the -vm path exist. Is this normal? Side question: is the JRE instead of JDK required? I wanted the JDK so that I can do Java development but I do not think there is a difference except only where the jre path is different. The Sun JVM is proprietary and so not shipped with Fedora, which only contains Free Software (and sadly some firmware blobs). What is the reason it cannot run with one of the free alternatives like GCJ (java-1.5.0-gcj) or IcedTea (java-1.6.0-openjdk) that are shipped with Fedora? I am sure we want to fix any issues that prevent Eclipse's Ganemede from working out of the box. Eclipse works just fine with OpenJDK. I've spoken with Dan offline and while I don't have confirmation, I suspect he was bitten by the fact that the XULRunner APIs changed post-Eclipse 3.4 (Ganymede) release so out of the box on Fedora 11, Eclipse 3.4 will crash when trying to render the welcome page (and other browser-using bits). In our Fedora packages of Eclipse 3.4.2, we carry a patch from upstream to work with the latest XULRunner APIs. Eclipse 3.5 (aka Galileo) works with the latest XULRunner APIs so this is will no longer be necessary in Fedora 12. Now I have JavaFX installed! Super!!! Now, I have a new problem and hope someone can tell me how to resolve another problem? I have downloaded and installed JavaFX to /opt/javafx-sdk1.2, and when I installed the JavaFX Eclipse plugin, it tells me that I have to set the JAVA_HOME classpath. I followed many references from the Internet that says the value of JAVAFX_HOME should be set to where JavaFX is installed, IE to /opt/javafx-sdk1.2. Is this right? Well, the problem is, that my application is not resolving the imports, IE: import javax.media.*; import javax.media.control.*; import javax.media.format.*; import javax.media.protocol.*; The error says: "The import javax media cannot be resolved." I did right-click on the project application, and selected menu item: JavaFX->Add JavaFX Nature, but that does not seem to work in resolving the imports. Anyone know what I need to do to get this to work? Thanks! Dan From dant at cdkkt.com Fri Aug 28 18:52:53 2009 From: dant at cdkkt.com (Daniel B. There will not be a release of 3.4 with that fix [1]. The fix is there and we carry it in our Fedora packages. You could always re-build SWT from 3.4 with it. I recommend speaking with upstream if you really want to do that. Try adding the JARs with Project -> Build Path -> Configure Build Path... Libraries, Add External JARs. This is about all I can offer, though, as I have never used JavaFX. Upstream JavaFX may be able to help.
