udev by default?

Are there any particular reasons for not using udev by default these
days? It seems limiting the entries in /dev to existing devices is a
good idea (particularly given the number of devices currently listed...)

The only thing missing (IIRC) is autoloading of modules upon device
entry access, but that seems to be the job of hotplug anyway...
