Kernel 2.6.8-1.521 breaks Cisco VPN client...

Known problem with the Cisco VPN Client and 2.6.x kernels.  It is
already in Bugzilla (sorry, I cannot remember the number) and Cisco
are aware of the problem.  The problem is in the Cisco binary module,
so only they can fix it (and I believe they are working on it).

The workaround, as you already discovered, is to use a wireless connection...
