Once you figure out what the device is, edit /etc/cdrecord.conf and add
a line like:

CDR_DEVICE=cdrw

cdrw=   ATAPI:0,0,0  48  4m  burnfree

After you do this, you should never have to specify dev= again (unless
you have multiple burners).
