ongoing quest for vmware on Fedora Core 1 with 2.6.1 kernel

This question went unanswered. But I have managed to compile my first
2.6 series kernel!

2.6.3 from kernel.org running on Fedora Core 1 _DOES WORK_ with VMware
3.2.1. The kernels in "testing" do not work. What is the problem?
