I avoided using the newer python rpms because of killing up2date. Is yum
giving you the same errors?

Up2date works great with a new installation. I'm not sure to what is
happening with an upgrade vs. a clean install, maybe a configuration
file that does not get updated?

Try install older rpms for some of the common python relevent to both
ssl and up2date packages, to see if it starts working again.

rpm -U packagename.rpm --oldpackage
