Yes. I saw this too with a similar load (all my email since 1995->2001).
pine and mutt crashed if I recall... I didnt try the other formats
because I had not known that evolution could use different mail folders
at the time. I was quite impressed that while I was a gig into swap
space.. evolution didnt crash when I tried to sort by threads.
