I've actually met Murphy several times on this issue -- but *every* time
holding down the power button for 5 seconds has failed for me, it's
because a capacitor had exploded on the motherboard or power supply.

IME, if holding the power button down for 5 seconds doesn't work, your
hardware has much bigger problems...

(Still, this is something that should be configurable.)
