to come up with 42000 entries for Red Hat relevant distros.

The change is wrong. If yum or any other resolver is not doing the
right thing, it should be fixed there. After all
yum/apt/rcd/up2date/... should copy rpm's behaviour on computation of
upgrade paths.

And yum already has support for this (or not?). Just set exactarch to
0 in yum.conf. exactarch is a problem anyhow, when for instance athlon
packages get consolidated into i686 package like the kernel in FC2.

Please, don't work around a bug by introducing another. Enforcing name
changes due to arch changes is wrong.
