I would say the extra dash would break a lot of scripts. I am used to
break of version/release at the second dash at the end. Not very nice to
introduce inconsistency in this regard.

Also, wouldn't kernel-2.6.6-1.435-i686 be considered newer than
kernel-2.6.6-1.435-i586?
