/proc and init

During the early stages of boot /sbin/init mounts /proc so that it can check
for the presence of SE Linux. After it has finished doing the SE Linux stuff
it will umount /proc.

What I want to know is, why umount /proc? Why not just leave it mounted?

It seems a waste to umount it when you are just going to mount it again later.
