Talking about a two-way sync...
At the UKUUG Linux Developers Conference in Leeds Dave Coombs gave a
presentation on a project called WvSync.
There was a pretty good demonstration of two-way merging, which he has
given a great deal of attention to.

WvSync is a general framework for replicating named objects (which can
be files, but also many other things).
Have a look - it might find a place here.
