init.d contains scripts for services;
rc?.d contains symbolic links for services to be started or stoped in
that runlevel;
rc.d contains those directories (on fedora).

None. The binary is the same. It just chooses to behave as telinit
instead of init by checking that its PID != 1.

If gdm is to be started earlier in the boot process, isn't that the only
