Static linking considered harmful

Well, there are operating systems that pride themselves on that kind
of compatibility, and achieving it takes great effort.  In the absence
of that kind of commitment/desire in linux, exuberant promises of
backward compatibility must be tempered by the reality of buggy
applications.
