This thread is just highlighting the problems with using extensions to
disambiguate file-types.

The machine should be using the file magic to determine the content.

Fortunately this has worked for a long time:
[gmaxwell at limelight Zod-dvd-i386]$ file SHA1SUM
SHA1SUM: PGP armored data signed message

And of course, nautilus recognizes files in the same way.

This leaves you free to name the file in the most human compatible manner.
