whatever happened to the Alt+F2 installer shell?

Okay! That explains it, then.

I'm on the boot.iso, which will load stage2 from an installation source. 
And since that can't happen, because my network appears *down* to the 
system, i can't get to the stage2 image.

I'll try to think of other things to try to get this working.
