splix make fails

I was posting this on the user list, and it was suggested to perhaps take 
the thread here.  I'm trying to build the splix print driver for a 
Samsung ML-2510 laser printer.  The samsung driver from the website seems 
to have installed correctly, but won't print.  There's a "ml2510 (Default 
Printer) "/usr/lib/cups/backend/mfp failed"" at <http://localhost:631/
printers/> in CUPS, which appeared after installing the samsung driver.
