Why isn't emacs installed by default

No, the slow developement of emacs has NOTHING to do with its number of 
users. The only reason is that the technical know-how required to 
contribute to emacs is quite high, because of the (convoluted) way emacs 
was designed (knowledge of LISP, enjoyment of self-inflicted suffering, 
...).
