D'oh - wrong config file! The card was set up with s-c-n initially. The
config reads

# Please read /usr/share/doc/initscripts-*/sysconfig.txt
# for the documentation of these parameters.
TYPE=Wireless
DEVICE=wlan0
HWADDR=00:1b:fc:3e:41:11
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
NETMASK=
DHCP_HOSTNAME=
IPADDR=
DOMAIN=
ONBOOT=yes
USERCTL=no
IPV6INIT=no
PEERDNS=yes
ESSID=SKYabcde (not letters, but numbers)
CHANNEL=1
MODE=Managed
RATE=Auto

It continually asks me for the passphrase or network key
