One approach is to say that actually the entire filesystem is read-only,
kind of like a live OS except for /home, which is on the required SD
card.  There is certainly work on this that's been done in the context
of the Stateless project in the past.

The only time it needs to be made un-readonly is for software updates.
Downside of this approach is that you can't use the SD card for reading
photos from your camera.
