It might work.

Yes. (Well you would want to use yum upgrade, but on Fedora the default
is to have obsoletes=1 . You might also want to have skip_broken=1 .
Afterwords you'll want to check for orphaned packages and do something with
them. You can use package-cleanup --orphans to get a list.
