Since ifcfg files will probably never support things like VPN, 3G, WPA,
etc, NM has a system settings 'keyfile' plugin that allows editing
system connections from the connection editor, or your favorite text
editor if you don't use a GUI at all.  Add ",keyfile" to the --plugins
argument in
the /usr/share/dbus-1/system-services/org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerSystemSettings.service file, and then 'killall -TERM nm-system-settings'.

The format for some of the options isn't yet optimal, and it needs more
documentation, but it supports all options that NM supports.  Yes, you
can have mobile broadband before boot with NM if you like.
