Packaging guidelines update? - Naming snapshots

If I remember it correctly from the previous discussions on this theme,
then the main purpose of using date in the revision for svn, git, etc.
is that it is immediately clear how old is the snapshot. And this
information cannot be seen from the revision number or git hash without
asking the version control system first.
