What does /var/log/Xorg.0.log say?

I ran into something like this by setting up ntpd to start in
NetworkManager/dispatcher.d. Apparently Xorg (or gdm) doesn't like
having the time set as it's starting up. I fixed the problem by adding
a new service that just waits until all the NetworkManager/dispatcher.d
functions have finished.
