X with intel kms framebuffer not drawing

reboot and got the splash screen but all I got was a working X cursor
with the frozen framebuffer behind.
switched vts to a terminal and back left me with the cursor over the
old terminal buffer.
nothing is crashing and can still login blindly with the cursor doing
changeovers like normal.

I'm running 11 alpha plus updates every day.
