Have you considered taking this to distributions at freedesktop.org and 
discussion about having a single format between distributions for 
defining groups? SUSE shares repomd format but has defined their own 
group structure at

Debian and Ubuntu seems to rely on metapackages and task selects. Some 
coordination would be helpful.
