Why does mkinitrd require plymouth?

And now instead of two different code paths to get the passphrase
entered, we have one.

Plymouth is what provides the "text" mode bootup.  It /also/ provides
the graphical boot up, via plugins.  It is what generates boot.log,
shows messages on the screen, and captures passphrases for encrypted
root.
