I tested this on a couple of examples, and your version works fine
without that bracket patch.  I ran into this problem in December on a
couple of files, and also saw it mentioned on the message board
( http://www.sketchyorigins.com/comics/showthread.php?t=7932 ), though
now I can't reproduce it.  So, you should probably drop the patch, since
it's definitely causing problems with open archives as Michael
mentioned.
