We have even modified yum 2.0.x (currently 2.0.7) to work with this naming convention.

Why did yum need to be modified?

Yum would install the kernel-module-<name>-<kernel> rpm's just fine. The problem we wanted fixed was when you do a kernel update. We wanted it to find all the kernel-module rpm's, that went with the new kernel.
