the repository metadata count shows as 1271 - which is where repoview
gets the numbers from.

If you take a complete list of pkgs from the repo and remove out the
debuginfo and src.rpms you end up with 1271 individual packages.

why on earth would you do anything in perl :)

yum install yum-utils

repomanage -o /some/path

that will list all the old packages in the repository that could be
removed.
