As the person who wrote the dist tag documentation, it is not, and never
will be, mandatory. :)

There are plenty of cases in which it is useful, and plenty of cases
when it is not useful.

All you have to do is remember the golden rule of branch hierarchy:

foo in branch bar must be of a higher n-v-r when compared to foo in
branch (bar--).
