thank you for that information. Curiously I do not see a difference
whether I "%exclude" the .la file in %files (-1 release) or whether I rm
it in %install (-2 release):

$ ~/rpmsizetest.sh lzo2-2.01-1.i386.rpm
*     143201     143185 lzo2-2.01-1.i386.rpm

$ ~/rpmsizetest.sh lzo2-2.01-2.i386.rpm
*     143201     143185 lzo2-2.01-2.i386.rpm
