I guess that's 160 bits - regardless of the input length, too. In this
particular case, are the SHA-1 hashes of all the random sequences of 160
bits going to be unique?
I just use
dd if=/dev/urandom count=1 bs=X 2>/dev/null | hexdump -v -e '1/1 "%02x"'
(hexdump is in util-linux)
