He was also an eminent historian of tongues, and a perfectionist : read
any volume of his son Christopher's edition of the posthumous writings,
especially the ones he calls collectively "History of Middle-earth" which
deal with the process of writing the Lord of the Rings.

And you remark would certainly offend many of his innumerable fans ....
