Hey Chris,
 I was pondering packaging up git myself too, but held off for one reason.
Right now, Linus has the perogative to say "oh shit, this is wrong"
and redesign the meta-data to work around whatever comes up, and
the only projects really affected are his own (and subsequent clones).

If we package up git now, and people started using it to host their
own projects, what happens when the next release of git won't read
their old repositories ?

I'd be tempted to sit things out a bit longer before its added,
even to extras, until its got a few more battle-scars.
