Oops. So I probably wasn't very clear with what I was actually suggesting in my
comment above. What I meant to suggest was:
Version: 0.0
Release: 20050930.X%{dist}
(where the X in the release is the digit that is bumped per iteration, of
course). If you really dislike 0.0 as a version number, choose whatever else
that you like that you are sure is smaller than what the first beta version will
be labeled with - something like 0.1 is probably safe too, but it sure is a bit
hard to explain why it's better than 0.0 as far as I can see.
This way you'll get a sane upgrade path to the beta which you have label
(assuming that the verision number is actually 0.9 as I believe that I have heard)
Version: 0.9
Release: X%{dist}
just like any other package.
