Sorry for my late answer. I have been busy with some preparation of a fair and
ill afterwards. But now I am finally back to packaging GIS software :-)

You were right. I ran into the problem when I packaged another more complicated
software using gdal which is called qgis. I now added all (at least I think so)
necessary dependencies.
Furthermore I build a new version of the package, since meanwhile gdal 1.3.1 has
become available. Please look again at http://ftp.intevation.de/freegis/fedora/4/
