I haven't had time to test yet, but perhaps you should think more about using
some lower version number? The current "date version" is really just a snapshot
date - as far as I have understood the "beta release" will be numbered 0.9 and
it would be a shame to have to bump the epoch immediately just because the first
package had a huge version number!

I think that knowingly forcing epoch=1 (which you'll need once the official beta
comes out unless you want to diverge drastically from upstream version numbers)
is a large price to pay just to stick with conventions from the
upstream-produced RPMs of earlier versions. Fedora packages generally haven't
made too much in the way of concessions to please external packages - sometimes
that's annoying, but often it's a sane engineering policy.
