This is definitely something you should talk to upstream about.

The first problem I see with that scheme in comment #15 is a situation where
there is an update to the release after a snapshot.

wine-0.9-0.1:1 < wine-0.9-0.20060101:1 < wine-0.9-0.3 or wine-0.9-1.1:1

My earlier suggestion actually also fails in this situation.

Perhaps:

wine-0.9-1:1 < wine-0.9.1-1:1 < wine-0.10-0.20060101:1 < wine-0.10-1:1 <
wine-1.0-1:1

Basically, increment the version number by one, keeping the following number < 1
for snapshots, making the release number 1 (or greater, as applies) for the
actual releases.  This works in my head.

Again, probably best to discuss the possibilities with upstream.  This solution
doesn't exactly seem elegant, it just works... I think.

These ideas apply equally without regard to the epoch.
