Triggers have the nasty habit of executing themselves years after they
were pumped in the system, usually when the conditions needed for good
execution are no longer true (because file layout and package layout
changed too much). It makes for fun-to-debug failure cases.

Avoid-triggers-at-all-costs is a very good advice. Only do them if you
don't find any other way to achieve your aims, which is not the case
there.
