Which kernel/arch is this with?  I haven't run across this with my testing, but
I've only tested with a small cross-section of systems.

Unfortunately, this is the way that Digium built the system.  Replacing the code
in Asterisk that depends on Zaptel kernel modules for anything but accessing
real Zaptel hardware is technically possible but that isn't something that
Digium seems to think is a very high priority.
