Hi,

I stumbled over bug #174307 [1] which deals with the fact that the current
version of rpm included in Fedora Core (even version 6) is somewhat outdated.
This is a bit confusing since I thought every package here should be as close
as possible to upstream.
Also, it is strange because the package maintainer didn't even show up on that
bug report once - I'm not sure about the reasons, but that definitely does
not shed the best light at a person maintaining a real core package of Fedora
Core - but maybe I just missed something.

Additionally there are hardly any information available why this problem even
exists - since no one responsible reacted the only source of information is a
post on the bugzilla-e-mail-list [2] explaining that Red hat does not like
the suggestion feature of the new rpm version - and that Red Hat thinks about
forking rpm.
Both sounds a bit odd - first, why is this new feature such a problem? I can't
see the disadvantages, please point them out. Second, we have rules, so if
you do not like a feature, forbid its usage by rule - why the need for a
fork?

Does anyone has some more information about this topic? Especially the
reasons, why for example suggestions are evil and forking is the only
solution, would be helpful. Maybe I'm just looking at it with the wrong
perspective :)

Roland

PS: There is another, but useless source of information: [3]
Also the topic was discussed at the fab meetings in July[4] and August,
however there are no real information about what the probably actually is or
what was discussed.
