Well, bugzilla has one (IMO important) advantage over mail/irc: A
neutral entity that tracks that someone made the attempt to contact the
maintainer. With IRC you might ping the maintainer, but he hasn't looked
at the client before leaving IRC. Mails might get lost in between.
