We would like to extend an invitation at this time to East Asian users in particular to test this preliminary release and provide us with feedback so we can improve the software and ensure that the Input Methods will be easier, more efficient and pleasant to use. Intranet/Internet Input Method Framework (IIIMF) is the next generation Input Method Framework set to replace the legacy X Window System Input Method (XIM) used by existing Input Methods such as chinput, xcin, kinput2, ami and many others. As the technology is still at its infancy, wider testing effort by community is needed to expediate the maturity of the technology. IIIMF server loads Language Engines (LE) dynamically at runtime as requested by clients. In this first round of testing, four LEs are available: + iiimf-le-inpinyin for Simplified Chinese (zh_CN.UTF-8) + iiimf-le-xcin for Traditional Chinese (zh_TW.UTF-8) + iiimf-le-canna for Japanese (ja_JP.UTF-8) + iiimf-le-hangul for Korean (ko_KR.UTf-8) If you wish to participate in this first round of testing, a Testing Guide is now available at . It will give you the necessary information in setting up the IIIMF and using the LE specific to your locale. For instance, currently I have a bash script that sets all necessary environment variables for Japanese input, so that ./jpn.sh appname will launch the app with Japanese input capability while retaining en_US locale. Is it possible to do something similar with IIim? My system is FC1. Yes, iiimf should work fine in any UTF-8 locale, certainly en_US-UTF-8 is supported and known to work. I installed iiimf-server, gtk2, le-inpinyin and packages they required. Launch gedit, click to select the "IIIMF" input method. A small box with English appears around the bottom of the gedit window. Ctrl-Space switches to the Pinyin input. So far so good. I succeeded in typing some Chinese with this input method. The immediate awkward thing I found is the input of punctuations. Typing (or any punctuation keys, I guess) without letters (i.e., no pinyin typed) put me into an unknown position: Only backspace can get me out. I tried to use , number keys, but the situation just got more wierd. It seems that more than two input engines for one locale can be installed. My only complaint is the (lack-of) function in the delete key during input (when my text is underlined). In XIM (kinput2 --canna) and windows, I can delete english characters one by one, even if they have already been converted to hiragana. So ? *delete* becomes k. As it is right now, i don't seem to get a response from the backspace key, which is somewhat annoying. I normally make a type every other sentence or so, so this really slows me down (i like to kanji-fy it at the end of each sentence, as of now i have to stop, delete the sentence, start over). Very briefly, /usr/lib/im/locale is the place where LEs keeps their object or binary (data) files required when the LE loads. It is created during the installation of LE. So in the case of CannaLE, nothing external is loaded, so that's why there is no ja_JP dir. This is meant to be under the thread of "Test result (Can't communicate with IIIM server)". I got the same error and solved it by modifying the /usr/lib/im/htt.conf file. I have to add the following line to that file: AccessControl permit 127.0.0.1 The htt.conf file seems to be very straightforward and well documented. If I understand it correctly, the default setting seems to reject any connection to the htt server. However judging from the comments made in that thread, it obviously not the case for some people. So I don't know. Could this be a FC1 vs. FC2 thing? My system is essentially a FC1 with a home-made 2.6.3rc4 kernel (if that matters).
