Ok.  This time I tried the following without running httx.

$ export LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8
$ export GTK_IM_MODULE=iiim
$ gedit

But I still get the "Can't communicate..." error with no Japanese input.

Is there any logging facility that I can make use of?
