The Fedora Services Documentation (announced earlier)and the BaseClient Documentation. Please have a glance at them as there are several backwards incompatible changes here. I'd like to make all backwards incompatible changes in one go so if you have any other changes you want to include, don't hesitate to speak up. The documents are checked into the bzr repo: sudo yum -y install bzr bzrtools bzr branch bzr://bzr.fedorahosted.org/bzr/python-fedora/python-fedora-devel cd python-fedora-devel/doc And also on the wiki: https://fedorahosted.org/python-fedora/wiki/doc/client https://fedorahosted.org/python-fedora/wiki/doc/service I'm looking into how difficult it will be to add two more features before calling this done: 1) Accessing the data via attribute lookup as well as dictionary lookup. So these would be equivalent: pkgListing['package']['name'] pkgListing.package.name 2) Introspection architecture for the server I also have a request for enabling batch requests (similar to xmlrpc's multicall) but I have a feeling this will take too long to create it for 0.3. If someone else wants to take a look at how we could implement this by FUDCon I'd be fine with adding it, though. -Toshio -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... For the past month or so I have just been subscribed to the mailing list and watching the IRC channel seeing how things work in the infrastructure world, although I decided that it was time I said Hi. I've been using Linux for around 2 years (Ubuntu for 1.5 years and Fedora the rest of the time) and have had some experience in setting up a few general Debian and a home Fedora server. Learning Python is currently on my list of things to do and although my current sysadmin skills are lacking I would really like to improve on these. The things that interest me (and that i would like to work on in Fedora infrastructure) are currently are Xen (although I've never used it, it sounds very cool), the sysadmin-test FIG (always fun playing with and testing new things) and sysadmin-noc FIG (monitoring is something that is really cool as well and nobody likes to see downtime on machines). I'm usually on irc with the nick harrisony and check my emails pretty often. Thanks for your time in reading this Regards, Harrison P.S - Please excuse any bad spelling, grammar or any errors in this email as its almost 2am and I'm getting quite tired :) -- Harrison Conlin From timothy.galyean at twcable.com Tue Jun 3 17:43:41 2008 From: timothy.galyean at twcable.com (Galyean, Timothy) Date: Tue, 3 Jun 2008 13:43:41 -0400 Subject: Introduction Message-ID: Hi, My name is Tim Galyean. I currently work for Time Warner's Engineering Operations Center. I assist in monitoring our plant as well as network, and capacity based provisioning system. I have been using Linux/Unix for about 4 years now. I have various levels of experience with the Linux OS, ranging from Thin Clients to Servers and desktop's. I am looking forward to expanding my skillset in all aspects of the linux environment more specificly the network side. The reason I applied for the Infrastructure team is because this is the area of IT I enjoy most. If accepted I would like to join the sysadmin-tools and sysadmin-noc FIG's. I feel these groups would be a great match for my current skillset as well as helping learn more about the various aspects of the network. Additionally I have pretty extensive experience with VoIP protocols, more specificly SIP and MGCP, on an enterprise scale, however I feel that there is allways more to learn about these types of systems, and feel that I may be able to assist with these as well. Thank you for reading my introduction, if you have any questions please feel free to contact me. Thanks again. This brings the names of variables used in python-fedora into conformance with PEP8. However, it does cause breakage in public instance and class variables as well as the parameter names. Since this is destined for 0.3 which has incompatible changes, this is the time for these changes. If this is considered too much of a problem to port apps to for a cosmetic change, please holler now so we can revert before too many other changes accumulate on top of this. Also note, I've started compiling a list of incompatibilities between 0.2.99.11.1 and what will be 0.3. These are listed below and will be replicated in the NEWS file shortly. * Removal of camelCase. Rename keyword arguments and public instance variables: * client.BaseClient *Note* that changes to this class propogate out to the same variable in derived classes like fas2.AccountSystem and the BaseClient used in JsonFasIdentity. * __init__(): baseURL => base_url * _sessionCookie => _session_cookie: this is a private variable but some users use this anyway. For users needing to access this, there's now a more appropriate class for doing so (ProxyClass). * accounts.fas2.AccountSystem * group_by_id(): groupId => group_id * person_by_id(): personId => person_id * tg.widgets * All widgets had widgetId => widget_id * Also means accessing the variable is done via self.widget_id * tg.json.SABase * self.jsonProps => self.json_props * BaseClient.send_request() has keyword argument input renamed to req_params * Restructuring of Exceptions in BaseClient * New base exception is FedoraServiceError if you want to catch that. * Rename accounts.fas2.AccountSystem.authenticate() to verify_password() -Toshio -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... I'm looking to set up a proof of concept deployment of Testopia for Fedora. The idea is to experiment with managing installation testing via this, to see if it works better than using the wiki. There are various XML-RPC hooks it supports that might help with automating some of our testing. It patches the core of Bugzilla, and hence has to be built as part of the core package, rather than a separate srpm. I've submitted a testopia package for review as bug 450013. We wouldn't be using the bug-tracking capabilities of it; instead treat the bz nature of it as simply the libraries/modules that form the run-time environment. For now I'd like a virtual machine as a playground for setting this up. RHEL5.2 OS, 1 gig memory, and 10 gig of disk space would probably be adequate for now. I have no idea what the resource constraints are like for Fedora, so if this is unreasonable then please say so. Hope this makes sense; how does this sound? 08:13 < G> Not too bad, the testing turnout is lower than expected, but I've fixed a few bugs, but it'd be nice if a few more could have a poke 08:14 < G> Just trying to get the UI looking a bit better and we'd be ready 08:14 < dgilmore> awesome 08:15 < G> First election starts Friday 13 (Bad luck eh?) so I'll look at getting it onthe app servers & ready around the 10th, I'll poke Mike etc a few days before to get that all sorted out 08:15 < dgilmore> cool 08:15 < dgilmore> anything you need to help make it work? something they want to comment on? 08:18 < dgilmore> or are we all asleep 08:18 < G> Wiki matters maybe? 08:19 < dgilmore> sure 08:19 < G> most of the requests are fairly trivial but there is one to setup an interwiki link for Bugzilla which gets a +1 from me 08:20 < G> That requires DB access 08:20 < dgilmore> what kind of db access? 08:20 < G> The other is a request from QA to setup a special namespace QA: vs QA/ for Test cases 08:20 < G> just one off write to configure the iwlink 08:21 < G> .ticket 588 08:21 < zodbot> G: #588 (change wiki config to create QA namespace) - Fedora Infrastructure - Trac - https://fedorahosted.org/projects/fedora-infrastructure/ticket/588 08:21 < G> and 08:21 < G> .ticket 591 08:21 < zodbot> G: #591 (bugzilla interwiki link) - Fedora Infrastructure - Trac - https://fedorahosted.org/projects/fedora-infrastructure/ticket/591 08:23 < G> QA namespace seems appropriate for the reasons mentioned in the ticket, I'm just concerned about number of test cases ending up in the "low thousands" and if they'd be better on a CMS or something 08:23 < dgilmore> G: how would the bug one work? when you put bug: it then knows to send it to bugzilla? 08:24 < dgilmore> QA i think its fine 08:24 < G> If i put [[bug:123456]] upon clicking it would send the user to bug 123456 on BZ 08:24 < buggbot> Bug https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=123456 medium, medium, ---, Arjan van de Ven, CLOSED DUPLICATE, System with Syntax - S635MP motherboard will not install 08:24 < G> buggbot: ahhh shuddup :) 08:24 < buggbot> G: Error: "ahhh" is not a valid command. 08:25 < harrisony> hahaha 08:25 < G> dgilmore: so +1 on QA namespace? 08:25 < dgilmore> G: i think its reasonable. id get input from skvidal and mmcgrath and if they dont object make it so 08:26 * skvidal looks up 08:26 < G> wwoods: is this still what you want? (QA Namespace) 08:26 < abadger1999> is there value in having interwiki links to other bug trackers? 08:26 < G> I can't do the interwiki one, I don't have access to the db 08:26 < dgilmore> skvidal: making a small db change for mediawiki to make linking tobugs easier 08:26 < skvidal> abadger1999: in some of the project pages I'm sure there will be 08:26 < skvidal> abadger1999: ie: gnome, fd.o 08:26 < G> abadger1999: potentially, Gnome & KDE are good ones 08:26 < abadger1999> [[b.r.c:1234567]] goes to bugzilla.redhat.com 08:27 < G> Freedesktop too 08:27 < G> rhbug gnomebug kdebug fdobug 08:27 < abadger1999> 08:28 < abadger1999> Sounds good to do that. 08:28 < G> in that case, I'll get the sql worked out and poke someone to throw it in the db :) 08:28 < dgilmore> G: ok, abadger1999 or I can do it 08:29 < G> sounds good 08:29 < wwoods> QA namespace - we may not end up putting test cases in the wiki 08:29 < dgilmore> wwoods: so put that request on hold until you get back to us? 08:30 < wwoods> RH QE folks want to have a Testopia instance up before FUDCon, and Testopia does its own test case management 08:30 < wwoods> so, yeah, put that one on hold 08:30 < G> sounds fine by me :) 08:30 < G> .ticket 598 08:30 < zodbot> G: #598 (wiki: create mailinglist for all notifications) - Fedora Infrastructure - Trac - https://fedorahosted.org/projects/fedora-infrastructure/ticket/598 08:30 < wwoods> We're still discussing whether the test cases will be kept in testopia or in the wiki 08:30 < wwoods> I'll let you know when we come to a decision 08:31 < G> is the last bit of wiki stuff that I saw, something like 'fedora-wiki-changes' list 08:31 < G> wwoods: sure, thanks 08:33 < dgilmore> G: seems reasonable. can we add better notification support to mediawiki? 08:34 < G> well the watch lists are user customizable and were never really designed to be a regexp thing, so a blanket mailing list like this could be good with topics to filter what people want 08:34 < G> Unsure if there is a solution better than that though 08:35 < dgilmore> ok. maybe we ca look at adding a regexp type thing 08:35 < dgilmore> anyway wiki seems to be a hit so far 08:36 < G> Yeah, just wish people would put userpages & subpages in User:Fasname etc 08:36 * dgilmore doesnt understand how mediawiki works 08:36 < jbrothers> .ticket 604 08:36 < zodbot> jbrothers: #604 (Embedded html problem) - Fedora Infrastructure - Trac - https://fedorahosted.org/projects/fedora-infrastructure/ticket/604 08:36 < jbrothers> i just added this ticket 08:37 < jbrothers> don't know if there is a mediawiki syntax for this kind of thing 08:37 < G> jbrothers: thats something that will fixed overtime, we'd already done a bit of work, some pages just havn't had the same level of TLC from contributors and the docs team 08:37 < jcollie> jbrothers: that's deliberate 08:37 < dgilmore> G: people will need to be educated in the way of mediawiki. me included 08:37 < G> dgilmore: yep maybe a Wiki Education session at FUDcon is needed :P *ducks* 08:38 < dgilmore> G: perhaps 08:39 < G> But thats all from me about the wiki and everything 08:39 < dgilmore> :) thanks 08:39 -!- dgilmore changed the topic of #fedora-meeting to: Infra meeting: open discussion 08:40 < G> mmcgrath: so, are the blades happy now? 08:40 < dgilmore> anyone have anything else to talk about 08:41 < G> dgilmore: nothing here, I was going to talk about the elections app but we already did :) 08:42 < dgilmore> alrighty well if no one has anything to add. ill wrap up in 60 08:43 < dgilmore> 30 08:43 < dgilmore> its a wrap. thanks ya'll 08:43 < skvidal> bye 08:43 < G> Thank you! 08:43 < harrisony> ty From jwalters at redhat.com Fri Jun 6 01:04:57 2008 From: jwalters at redhat.com (Jake Walters) Date: Thu, 05 Jun 2008 21:04:57 -0400 Subject: Intro: Jake Walters Message-ID: <48488D39.4020701@redhat.com> -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hey everyone, I currently work at Red Hat as a SysAdmin for internal systems...I started at RH in 2006 at the internal Help Desk and switched over to the SA job this past January. After FudCon I'll be taking a vacation from June 23 - July 1 with relatives in Vermont so I won't be getting anything done for that week and a half. -Toshio -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... I'm not sure how painful deleting old accounts are, but we are currently working on the capability for users (and administrators) to mark an account as inactive (which would prevent it from being used anywhere unless its password is reset). Right now, the main question is just how it will appear in the interface (vs. how things like fasClient will see it). This attribute was introduced in MediaWiki as a countermeasure against spammers which tried to abuse Wikipedia, linking to their own malicious websites. While there is some merit of using this at Wikipedia, where even unauthenticated users are allowed to post, other people do not think this is fair and consider Wikipedia acts like a black hole of the web, absorbing PageRank without giving anything back, after it used all the PageRank received to build its reputation (this is also my opinion and when I link to Wikipedia in my websites I always use rel="nofollow"). The situation in our wiki is very different: we allow posting only from authenticated users which have a FAS account, so the editors have to pass a number of filters and leave enough identification data. Personally, I hate to be treated as a spammer (such treatment is a result of using rel="nofollow" by default). *If* I am found abusing the system for personal gain, then kick me out and remove all my rights, otherwise I believe I deserve to be considered an innocent user. I also think there are legit uses for "dofollow" links in our wiki: we want to give PageRank value to friendly or sister projects, like pages from fedorahosted.org, fedorapeople.org or entities like GNOME, Red Hat or CentOS. So, based on the argumentation above, my proposal is to trust the users and remove the "nofollow" attribute. -- nicu :: http://nicubunu.ro :: http://nicubunu.blogspot.com Cool Fedora wallpapers: http://fedora.nicubunu.ro/wallpapers/ Open Clip Art Library: http://www.openclipart.org my Fedora stuff: http://fedora.nicubunu.ro From ricky at fedoraproject.org Mon Jun 9 13:29:51 2008 From: ricky at fedoraproject.org (Ricky Zhou) Date: Mon, 9 Jun 2008 09:29:51 -0400 Subject: wiki and nofollow links In-Reply-To: <484D2A32.2080303@nicubunu.ro> References: <484D2A32.2080303@nicubunu.ro> Message-ID: <20080609132951.GB3201@Max> On 2008-06-09 04:03:46 PM, Nicu Buculei wrote: > So, based on the argumentation above, my proposal is to trust the users and > remove the "nofollow" attribute. But the reason for this mail is just a heads up about the Transformer filter. I made some much-needed changes [1] to the Transformer filter that *may* affect Trac plugins that use it. It's unlikely, but just in case you notice odd changes in behaviour, this change could be the culprit. As a sample, Vote, Tags and Hackergotchi all worked fine. Changeset description reproduced here for convenience: - Content-insertion transformations (before, after, etc.) now accept a callable. - .prepend() now only operates on elements. Previously it also operated on OUTSIDE marked events. - Where it makes sense, transformations are now consistently applied to individually selected objects in the document, rather than on any contiguous selection. This means that adjacent selected elements will be treated individually rather than as a whole. - Transformations should now consistently work on the context node. - .substitute() now defaults to a count of 0 (ie. all) rather than 1. This is to be consistent with Python's regex substitution. - ATTR events now have a kind of ATTR in addition to having this as their mark. - Added the BREAK mark. This allows cuts of otherwise seamlessly joined objects to be operated on. - Added a full test suite. Why? Simple reason, i18n/l10n Moin Moin gave us the easy ability of having all languages in the one wiki installation, Mediawiki doesn't, the proposed solution is a one-wiki-per-language setup, as such the proposed URL structure is fedoraproject.org/XX/wiki which fits into the whole fedoraproject.org/XX/ fedoraproject.org/XX/get-fedora way of things. The change would involve mod_rewriting /wiki/Foo to /en/wiki/Foo it should be pretty simple but it could potentially be controversial (apparently some people don't like their bookmarks becoming 302s :) This would be implemented when the testing on internationalising the wiki is done (say 1-3 weeks) and/or when the db1 switch over happens (I'm not sure on the date). We'd like to see new pages adhere to a new structure, and to have groups begin moving existing pages to a new structure. We're working on the details of the structure at [[Help:Wiki Structure]]: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Help:Wiki_Structure * Flat namespaces: Docs/SecurityGuide => Security_Guide * Categories: Docs/Drafts/GetInvolvedGuide => Get_Involved_Guide in Category:Draft_Documentation, then moved to Category:Documentation when complete One thing we've been tossing back and forth is how to deal with the two distinct audiences to the wiki: end-users and contributors. One argument is categorize and create ways to keep from duplicate naming problems. For example, adding (SIG) on the end of SIG pages. Another idea is to use Namespace:Foo, that is, create a new MediaWiki "Namespace" that sorts content into a separated part of the wiki. This removes the content from the index for the site Namespace (FedoraProject:). This might make sense in some cases, e.g. QA: for all the QA test plans. I don't think we want to sequester SIG or subProject content in that way. One reason we used directory-like hierarchy in the past was to make it "easier" to find pages. MediaWiki has a good search mechanism, but AFAICT it needs spaces "_" in page names to find words in titles. Regardless, it's going to do a better job of helping people find content than the MoinMoin search did. Another view point is that we don't want to hide contributor content from end-users, but it would help if we, for example, put a badge on end-user focused pages so it was clear "this is for help with using Fedora." That can be easily done with a template, cf. [[Template:Move]] for an idea of how it works. - Karsten -- Karsten Wade, Sr. Developer Community Mgr. Also working to make koji able to deal with .deb builders (called pbuild) as i have collegues who work on the .deb part. automate the database interaction with koji. - plague server/client : also deployed at work . - CVS + Sources control : deployed at work with a look-aside-cache-like tool. settup on RPM Fusion infrastructure too. * Account system : - FAS2 : Only on RPM fusion infra. We use something else at work for this part :(. but my employer is really interesting by FAS and FDS for our clients. * and FDS == System with which i'm familiar : == RedHat 8, 9, el4, el5 Solaris 8, 10 (we only update on release n+2 for technical reason) fedora (of course!) This prompted me to think about how we can help people update their databases if changes occur between versions of the database. For this particular update I added sql scripts to FAS in the updates/ directory and listed how to invoke them in the README. If you are updating your database schema and you are also packaging the software for general consumption (for instance, packaged in rpm form in Fedora proper), please consider how to manage this for your users. There's a variety of ways ranging from what I did to the `migrate`_ project (I haven't seen this appear in Fedora yet. Any takers?) leveraging tg-admin sql might work for simple cases like adding a new table but I haven't found that it will update existing tables. In any case, remembering to document the procedure for other members of the code will be great. .. migrate: http://code.google.com/p/sqlalchemy-migrate/ -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... That is to say, it's truly only useful to Perl programmers that want more powerful OOP than they've had in the past. But for writing code that needs to be maintained by humans, it's hard to beat Python. -- Ignacio Vazquez-Abrams <ivazqueznet at gmail.com> PLEASE don't CC me; I'm already subscribed -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Best, Jon ---------------- We've created a channel in Miro, Fedora TV, for use by the marketing team with things like screencast tutorials/video interviews etc and we want to make it easy for community people to submit their content. To do this, we planned to create a simple web form that collects the users' data (Name, e-mail, video URL etc) and then sends that off to an e-mail address. This e-mail address could either belong to a single editor or a mailing list (the latter is preferred), so that we can check it's relevant before adding it to the main channel feed for all the world to see. We have a simple script in PHP to collect this form information and e-mail it, and providing people don't think there are better approaches to this, we would like to get it hosted so that we can use it on Fedora Websites. First of which being why can't people just email this stuff? Second being, and this is probably a question for legal, in order to submit that stuff to us via a web form, wouldn't we need to require cla done? Third being, how large of files are we talking about emailing around (be very specific)? Email and video often seem ill suited to eachother. -Mike From jeff at ocjtech.us Tue Jun 17 13:57:43 2008 From: jeff at ocjtech.us (Jeffrey Ollie) Date: Tue, 17 Jun 2008 08:57:43 -0500 Subject: Fedora TV Submission Form - PHP In-Reply-To: <alpine.LFD.1.10.0806170847480.4142@laptop.mmcgrath.net> References: <507738ef0806170645m13c528adpd80aab674f61655a@mail.gmail.com> <alpine.LFD.1.10.0806170847480.4142@laptop.mmcgrath.net> Message-ID: <935ead450806170657t5ea8236awac4895142ce113ce@mail.gmail.com> On Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 8:49 AM, Mike McGrath <mmcgrath at redhat.com> wrote: > On Tue, 17 Jun 2008, Jonathan Roberts wrote: >> >> We've created a channel in Miro, Fedora TV, for use by the marketing >> team with things like screencast tutorials/video interviews etc and we >> want to make it easy for community people to submit their content. > > So I've got a couple of questions.... That includes a cron job that syncs user information from FAS at 10 and 40 minutes after the hour. 2) There are two conferences set up sip:fudcon at fedoraproject.org and sip:infrastructure at fedoraproject.org 3) Dialling in from the DID numbers work, and the directory appears to be working. Future plans/ideas: 1) Need content on talk.fedoraproject.org to help folks set up clients. Max has a done a good job of getting the boilerplate ready so now we need to do the hard work of writing the content. 2) Better system for provisioning conferences. Some of the requirements I have in mind are: a) password protected conferences for things like the Fedora Advisory Board meetings b) a way to stream audio using flumotion to a larger listen-only audience (for the town-hall meetings) c) an easy way to provision "normal" conference rooms for other groups 3) ??? Some of #2 was implemented during our testing phase, so we'll be able to re-use some of that work. The talk Mike McGrath has been giving today during FUDCon BarCamp, regarding Community Services Infrastructure, inspired me that this is something I can help with ;-) So, here's the officially required introduction of /me, so you guys know who I am and where I come from. My name is Jeroen van Meeuwen, aka kanarip, aka Dutch (as both the other names are somewhat unpronounceable for some people), and I'm 24 years old. I'm from the Netherlands (and proud of it), and I have done a little something here and there within Fedora before. In short I'm a developer of revisor, pyjigdo, a packager for several packages in Fedora and EPEL, an Ambassador and advocate of Free and Open Source software, the vice-president of Fedora EMEA[1], the composer of the Fedora Unity Re-Spins[2], and I have a couple of things pending like the SUMS Update Management System (SUMS), and puppetmanaged.org. As far as my dayjob is concerned I'm a Senior Consultant, certified in Linux, proprietary North American vendor crap and Cisco. My plan for getting involved with the Infrastructure team is basically two or three parts: - CSI, for the greater good and because it'll be a huge help with puppetmanaged.org, - Puppet, for Fedora Infra obviously, but also CSI and again puppetmanaged.org - Nagios & maybe cacti just for kicks Thank you so far for doing a great job and I look forward to work with you all! But there's a few very strange things happening in the new jsonfas interface. I've clued lmacken in on that so if he has time to work on it we could end up pushing the new stuff to some test servers. Otherwise it will probably wait until after I get back in July. 16:43 < ricky> jcollie: (and making cla_done a git group) 16:43 < jcollie> ricky: hmm ok that's bad then 16:43 < mmcgrath> ricky: we could have it owned by cla_done 16:43 < mmcgrath> that'd at least let everyone with an account already to have access. 16:43 < f13> you should be able create a group that doesn't require sponsorship 16:43 < ricky> We do have autojoin stuff working, but it'd still have everybody in cla_done on hosted1 16:43 < G> cla_done as a git group, no thank you 16:43 < ricky> That's what we wanted - something where anybody can get in, but only if they take some action 16:43 < G> that'd be as bad having cla_done requiring some git group which we had already :) 16:43 < ajax> f13: sponsorship groups require that a sponsor approve. non-sponsorship groups require that some other member approve. 16:44 < ajax> any other member. 16:44 < f13> ajax: blah 16:44 < jcollie> ricky: looks like everyone already has ssh on hosted1 16:44 < mmcgrath> The thing is that opens us up to abuse. 16:44 < ricky> ajax: non-sponsorship just means that the sponsorship isn't recorded. 16:44 < ricky> It's a minute difference 16:44 < ricky> But yeah, this is why I suggested fedorapeople :-) 16:44 < ajax> awesome. 16:44 < ricky> Ahhh! 16:45 < mmcgrath> the theory being that a sponsor is responsible for the person they sponsored. 16:45 < jcollie> well, since it's a git repo it'd be pretty easy to undo any vandalism 16:45 -!- sharkcz [n=dan at plz1-v-4-17.static.adsl.vol.cz] has quit "Ukon?uji" 16:45 < ricky> That's what we said - have a repo in fedorapeople that everybody can push to, then you can push from there to the fedorahosted project. 16:45 < mmcgrath> jcollie: is it though? 16:45 < mmcgrath> jcollie: if I stuck a bunch of child porn into one of our repos... how would you get rid of it? 16:45 < ajax> so yeah, my options are a world-pushable repo on fp.o that i pull from every once in a while, or i just continue to have to approve people. 16:46 < mmcgrath> ricky: hell, we could just make a repo on fedorahosted and make it world writable. 16:46 < ajax> mmcgrath: you _can_ push git trees that delete objects. it breaks people that already pulled them, but git isn't an append-only operation. 16:46 < ricky> mmcgrath: And give everybody in cla_done ssh on hosted1? 16:46 < mmcgrath> ajax: k 16:46 < mmcgrath> ricky: not sure yet. 16:46 < mmcgrath> I'd rather not 16:46 < mmcgrath> jeremy: you around? 16:46 < ricky> Yeah, that was my objection 16:46 * mmcgrath wonders if git:// can be configured for write 16:47 < jcollie> no it cant i don't think 16:47 < ricky> I'm pretty sure it can't be (but I could be wrong) 16:47 < G> mmcgrath: git+https? 16:47 < mmcgrath> eh 16:47 < jcollie> well, why don't we use a model more like the kernel? 16:47 < ricky> That's pretty much what I was suggesting 16:47 < mmcgrath> jcollie: what model is that? 16:47 -!- tibbs_ [n=tibbs at fedora/tibbs] has quit "Konversation terminated!" 16:48 < jcollie> where the main repo is controlled by ajax and people email him links to their repo thats hosted wherever they want 16:48 < ricky> well, except kind of in reverse 16:48 < ajax> i'm okay with it being "only people with fedora accounts" instead of "anyone in the world" 16:48 < ricky> I was eliminating one step y having people push to ajax's repo, the ajax pushing to the "main" fedorahosted one 16:48 < ajax> truly-world-writable is more than i'm asking for and probably not a good idea. 16:48 < mmcgrath> jcollie: we can do that but it shifts some burden onto ajax 16:49 < ajax> ... which is the whole thing i'm trying to avoid ;) 16:49 < ricky> Ah. 16:49 < mmcgrath> so how about this for now. 16:49 < ajax> if i'm going to have two repos, i might as well just do the sponsorship thing like i'm already doing. 16:49 < ricky> The simplest solution that I can think of is: cla_done-writable main repo on fedorapeople.org 16:49 < ricky> That gets you everything except for the git.fedorahosted.org URL 16:50 < mmcgrath> ricky: that seems reasonable. 16:50 < ajax> (and therefore gitweb. but sure.) 16:50 < mmcgrath> ajax: if we stick this thing somewhere other then fedorahosted will that be ok with you? 16:50 < mmcgrath> ajax: actually jeremy just got gitweb and git:// working on people1 IIRC. 16:50 < mmcgrath> just this week 16:50 < ricky> ajax: jeremy set that up recently :-0 16:51 < ricky> **:-) 16:51 < ajax> oh sweet. 16:51 < jcollie> jeremy has gitweb running on fedorapeople now 16:51 < ajax> that's why he was asking how we did it on fd.o then. 16:51 < ajax> i'm dumb 16:51 * ricky laughs at the quotes 16:51 < mmcgrath> ajax: think that solution will work for now at least? 16:51 < G> ajax: can we quote that one? 16:51 < ricky> (https://fedorahosted.org/fedora-quotes/browser/fedora-quotes) 16:51 < mmcgrath> it seems like with as open as we are we'd be able to do something _that_ open :) 16:52 < ricky> G: Hahaa 16:52 < ajax> mmcgrath: sure. go ahead and drop it from fh.o whenever, i've got a clone on my laptop i can push to fp.o 16:53 < mmcgrath> ajax: k, you should be able to acl it any way you want. OK - could I give the go ahead for a Trac instance? What needs doing, and what can I do to help you guys out? I've been thinking it through, and I don't think we'd need anonymous ticket creation as FAS2 is such a low barrier to entry these days, and if it encourages people to sign up and become more involved in what ever way they wish, then I think it's probably a good direction to go... Is there some reason you can't just use publictest10? I don't know, it might be perfectly suitable. I don't have access to it, though. I need a F9 box with git, turbogears, sqlalchemy, genshi, postres, python-docutils, python-amara, python-cpio, python-fedora...and possibly other things I'm missing. Here's the ticket: https://fedorahosted.org/fedora-infrastructure/ticket/666 Heh. Lucky ticket ID there. You'd think I were writing this in java, or something. The basic selection algorithm for choosing the order in which to return mirrors to clients remains the same: prefer same netblocks, internet2 in same country if on internet2, same country, same continent, then global, in that order. However, until now, faster mirrors (those with larger bandwidths) were returned with equal probability as slower mirrors. This means not enough traffic was being sent to our gigabit-connected mirrors, and too much traffic was being sent to our slower mirrors. Each mirror's bandwidth value is now used as a weight. Mirrors with larger bandwidth will have a a higher probability of being returned earlier in the mirrorlist selection. Slower mirrors can still be returned as the first mirrorlist selection because this is based on probabilities, but should not be overwhelmed anymore. For countries with fewer mirrors, such as India, where there's some relatively fast mirrors, and several relatively slower mirrors, this should mean that users will more often get directed to the faster mirrors. I've made pretty fair progress getting things up and running (on my local system first to make sure it works), but I've run into an issue. For the setup, I'm basically ripping off the way Ricky Zhou set up fas wholesale. I have an amber.conf file in /etc/httpd/conf.d, which refers to an amber.wsgi file. All of that seems to work fine. The problem happens when I try to connect. I get a 500 error with the following in httpd's error log: Unable to write to session file /var/www/.fedora_session: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/var/www/.fedora_session' Well, it turns out that this is because my app is using jsonfas, which uses fedora.client.BaseClient. In fedora/client/__init__.py, I find: SESSION_FILE = path.join(path.expanduser('~'), '.fedora_session') Which explains the error - my app is running under apache, and while /var/www is apache's homedir, apache can't write to that directory. So, as anyone else worked around this with another turbogears app running under wsgi and using jsonfas? Since turbogears and fas are both pretty common, it seems likely that someone here has already dealt with this. Thanks, -RN -- Robin Norwood Red Hat, Inc. Does your application prompt users for their username and password or does it have one listed in the configs somewhere to access fas? I'm not familiar with the .fedora_session format, does it store everyone's sessions? I'm asuming that if someone had access to it they'd be able to become whoever was logged in at that time. Probably to other applications as well. I'd like to hear Toshio's advice on this, I believe he's the primary architect of how .fedora_session should behave -Mike From rnorwood at redhat.com Mon Jun 30 21:54:29 2008 From: rnorwood at redhat.com (Robin Norwood) Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2008 17:54:29 -0400 Subject: Advice on deploying wsgi app using jsonfas In-Reply-To: <alpine.LFD.1.10.0806301632160.13168@laptop.mmcgrath.net> References: <20080630171804.3f9adadc@solitude.devel.redhat.com> <alpine.LFD.1.10.0806301632160.13168@laptop.mmcgrath.net> Message-ID: <20080630175429.1ab10f7b@solitude.devel.redhat.com> On Mon, 30 Jun 2008 16:34:27 -0500 (CDT) Mike McGrath <mmcgrath at redhat.com> wrote: > On Mon, 30 Jun 2008, Robin Norwood wrote: > > > Hi, > > > > So I'm working to get amber packaged and deployable as a wsgi app > > so I can run a demo on publictest10. The way it seems to work is that I specify a user to connect to FAS in the config - this gets me a fas session. Then, the user enters a username/password from the web form, and jsonfas 'does magic' to authenticate the user. > I'm asuming that if someone had access to it they'd be able to become > whoever was logged in at that time. I don't know if he's ever used this sort of setup under wsgi/httpd, though. -RN -- Robin Norwood Red Hat, Inc. "The Sage does nothing, yet nothing remains undone." -Lao Tzu, Te Tao Ching
