sparse checking

Why am I not surprised? :-) Maybe I'll finally get around to posting 
some kABI build fixes too (one of the guys on an internal list is 
looking at this and has promised to send fixes, so I haven't yet) and in 
the process take a look at this. I don't use sparse enough.
